Spark ⚡3: Spaciousness and why we need it
Having lived in NYC for the last 6 years I feel like I have a whole new context on space. It’s not that London is all green rolling hills but the grid system of NYC across its five boroughs has you constantly thinking in squares. ‘One block east and two blocks south will get you where you want to go’.
Spark ⚡2: What happens if we stand still?
Today, I took my bike (a pandemic silver lining) on an 8am ferry from Brooklyn to Wall Street. Cycling around this city that I love is a whole new experience. It’s not for the faint hearted and I’ve decided not to read the statistics but instead embrace that It’s such a gift to be a novice again! A return to the ‘I know nothing’; negotiating traffic, figuring out the bike lanes that skim the surface of the bumpy roads and today having the choice to take the pretty and winding path along the Hudson with Lady Liberty and New Jersey serving as a striking backdrop. Some exercise, mixed in with adrenaline and somehow that ‘stuck’ feeling starts to dissipate.
Spark ⚡1: What are your conditions for being creative?
The other night, I went to see Martin McDonagh’s movie “The Banshees of Inisherin” starring the phenomenal Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell amongst others in this great cast. It’s set on a fictional remote island in Ireland during the Irish Civil War of 1923. As usual, I had read the blurb before I went, but even if I hadn’t, I have always really admired Martin’s work and and I was pretty sure I was going to like it.
